Cash still rules Laos — bring kip for everything small, withdraw big and rarely (ATM fees bite), and USD or Thai baht work for exchange everywhere. But Laos quietly solved the tourist payment problem, and Vang Vieng is one of the easiest places to use it.

Every shop, café, restaurant and hotel has a QR code that pulls straight from a Lao bank account. Locals scan it with their banking app. As a foreigner you cannot scan it with a normal foreign banking app — which brings us to the two bridge apps:

BCEL EzyKip is BCEL (the biggest Lao bank) app made for visitors. Download it before your trip, top it up, and you pay like a local almost everywhere in Vang Vieng — restaurants, shops, tuk-tuks with QR stands.

LOCA PAY is the alternative: link your foreign Visa or Mastercard — or Apple Pay / Google Pay — inside the LOCA app and scan the same Lao QR codes.

The honest fee math: both charge you, the tourist, roughly 3% plus a small flat fee (about 5,000 kip). The shop pays nothing and just sees a normal payment. For small meals that fee can matter — keep some cash for the cheap stuff, use the app when it is convenient.
